The degree to which large numbers of people feel isolated or lonely is being characterized as an epidemic. A survey of 20,000 U.S. adults conducted by CIGNA in 2018 produced some alarming findings concerning how lonely many people feel. Nearly half (46%) of Americans indicated that they sometimes or always feel alone, and 53% say they do not have meaningful in-person social interactions on a daily basis. Perhaps most alarming is that Gen Z was found to be the loneliest generation (!) In response to this, Hershey (yes, the chocolate company) has introduced a program aimed at helping to fight social isolation among young people through its Heartwarming Project, an initiative dedicated to helping teens, parents, and teachers create more inclusive communities. Hershey is working with partners to identify teens who are already interested in or taking action on the issue to attend the company’s Makers of Good Teen Summit and awarding $250 grants for teens to start or advance an inclusion project in their schools and communities. Hershey is also partnering with digital companies including Snapchat, Google, and Imgur to help teens use social media to foster positive connections and leverage their social media channels for good and promote their projects, using #stand4good. Hershey cites a logical link between addressing social isolation and the role of Hershey products in society because “Chocolate in some respects is the great connector.” What do YOU think, #ngpnation? Do you think GenZ is the loneliest and most isolated? Do you think this is a worthwhile venture to combat a true social ill or a superficial marketing scheme? Or both? Share your thoughts please! #nextgeneration #nextgenpolitics
