A coalition of philanthropic groups and major corporations in the Seattle area is launching a $2 million-plus campaign to help people disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus outbreak’s disruption of the economy.

A medical lab scientist at UW Medicine in Seattle shows a collected nasal swab sample from Washington to be tested for the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, March 4, 2020. A code on the bag has been digitally blurred to protect the patient’s identity. To combat the national shortage of diagnostic tests for the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, the Federal Drug Administration gave authorization to UW Medicine to test patient specimens provided by physicians and health care providers. New cases of COVID-19 continue to pop up around the Puget Sound region. In total, 70 people in Washington state have been diagnosed, including 11 people who have died, as of Thursday, March 5, 2020.
